Description:

The Collaborative Research Center (CRC or in German SFB) 1412 'Register: Language Users' Knowledge of Situational-Functional Variation' (http://sfb1412.hu-berlin.de) is a joint research project of the Humboldt-University Berlin (HU) and theLeibniz-Centre General Linguistics (ZAS). Currently 15 sub-projects at the Humboldt-University of Berlin and the ZAS investigate intra-speaker variation driven by situational and functional factors at all levels of language, and focusing on the language user's register knowledge and its relation to other types of linguistic knowledge. It is funded by the German Research Council DFG since 01.01.2020.

Within the Integrated Graduate School, we offer up to four fellowships for Postgraduate Researchers who want to pursue or are already pursuing a Ph.D. relating to the research program of the CRC, or want to explore topics relating to the CRC within their Ph.D. research. The Integrated Graduate School serves the fellows, the Ph.D. students, working the CRC and also early career postdocs in the CRC. The leaders of the CRC Integrated Graduate School are Uli Sauerland (ZAS) and Richard Waltereit (HU).

The starting date can be February March 1st, 2020 or any later first day of a month during 2020. The fellowship can have a duration of between three and twelve months. Remuneration is EUR 1,365 per month tax-free, but fellows will need to purchase health insurance. The fellowship can be used to prepare for a Ph.D. researcher position within the CRC, but can also be used to carry out a self-contained research project on the topic of the CRC. In either case, the prospective fellow must identify a research project in the CRC that they primarily will connect to and ideally contact a PI of that project at the time of application. The fellows are furthermore expected to participate in the training opportunities of the Graduate School, in particular methods schools, mentoring, and peer-to-peer networking events.

Applicants who are not yet registered in a Ph.D. program must have completed their M.A. by the planned start date. Applicants should name other research qualifications relevant to the planned research.The Integrated Graduate School aims to strengthen the diversity of the CRC and so members of groups traditionally underrepresented in German academic leadership positions are especially encouraged to apply.

Applications must be submitted via e-mail and include the following items, preferably in a single PDF:

- A letter of intent stating the following
a) nature of your interest in the fellowship and your research goals for the duration of the fellowship
b) your desired starting date and duration of fellowship
c) your contribution to the diversity goal of the CRC if any
d) the names and e-mail addresses of at least two scholars to be contacted for letters of recommendation.
- A CV including a complete list of qualifications and publications;
- Electronic copies of up to two representative writing samples;
- Any relevant transcripts and degree certificates in electronic form
