Abstract: El objetivo del presente es presentar las distintas agrupaciones lingüísticas a las que la lengua totonaca ha sido adscrita con la finalidad de ubicar a la variante de Patla-Chicontla. Partiendo de lo general a lo particular, la primera parte trata la ubicación genética dentro de macro-familias y discute algunos aspectos sobre el origen de la población totonaca; como continuación a lo anterior, trata la diversificación dialectal de la lengua y sus principales características. La segunda parte ubica a la variante de Patla y Chicontla y presenta una breve etnografía de estas comunidades totonacas de la Sierra Norte de Puebla, México.
