I’m a programmer working on the Multi Tree project here at the Linguist List. I just graduated from the University of Michigan with a B.S. in computer science and will soon start climbing the mountain of graduate school next year.

My current direction involves learning the technologies that are growing out of the development of a semantic web. There are some amazing possibilities by adding a dash of semantic flavoring to our current information landscape.

"Exciting things are happening in the life sciences. The big challenges such as cancer, AIDS, and drug discovery for new viruses require the interplay of vast amounts of data from many fields that overlap -- genomics, proteomics, epidemiology, and so on. Some of this data is public, some very proprietary to drug companies, and some very private to a patient. The Semantic Web challenge of getting interoperability across these fields is great but has huge potential benefits." -Tim Berners-Lee

I really enjoy the field of computer science for its symbiotic relationship to other disciplines. For my senior design project, I developed an online gallery for artists to publish exhibits and their portfolios. Right now I get to learn a little bit about linguistics in order to describe language relationships in a hyperbolic tree. Lots more fun to come.
