The Indo-Europeanist Oswald Szemerenyi died in Freiburg i. Br. on 29
December 1996 at the age of 83. I think that he was just able to
see the English translation of the fourth edition of his Einfuehrung
in die vergleichende Sprachwissenschaft which appeared one or two
months ago.
