PART-TIME RESEARCH POSITION Position: Half-Time Research Assistantship in an NLP Project at the Department of Linguistics, SOAS, University of London for 17.5 hours a week. Duration of Project: Two years, from October 1, 1995 Salary: Up to stlg10,000 a year for the half-time position, depending upon skills and qualifications Qualifications: Ph.D in linguistics, computer science, or related fields preferred. Advanced graduate students in these areas will be considered. Ability to program in Prolog, handle Unix, and do some systems maintenance work for a SUN SPARC 20 workstation is important. Background in theoretical and/or computational linguistics (or AI/NLP) is required. Project Description: The project will design and implement algorithms for ellipsis resolution in NL text which will run on top of a wide coverage parser. The project will test the robustness of the algorithms on large corpora. Algorithms for anaphora resolution will be integrated into a generalized ellipsis resolution system. The project will also experiment with parallel processing as well as sequential implementations of these algorithms. [Please Post] The Department of Linguistics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has a one-year opening for a holder of the Ph.D or an ABD in linguistics with specialization in Arabic and Semitic linguistics to teach advanced Arabic language and Semitic linguistics courses, as well as possibly a course in general linguistics, beginning 21 August 1995. Candidates must have teaching experience in Standard Arabic on the college level, have native or near-native fluency in Arabic and be able to supervise teaching assistants in the Arabic program.
