The Department of English, Miyagi Gakuin Women's College, Sendai, Japan, will
have a one-year visiting professor position opening as of April 1, 1995 or
September 1, 1995. Selections are to be made on an open competition basis, and
anyone as long as he/she fulfills the requirements is urged to apply for the

1: Degree and Status
The applicant should hold the minumum of an MA degree and he/she should be an
associate professor or professor with a tenure. The applicant of any
nationality can apply if he/she is a native speaker of English.

2: Field of Specialization
The applicant must have majored in linguistics, including second language

3: Courses to be taught and teaching responsibility
Five or six class hours per week, one class being 90 minutes in Japan. She/He
is to teach English conversation for 3 or 4 class hours and linguistics for
2 class hours.

4. Wages
Yearly salary of anywhere between US $40,000 and US $90,000 is to be paid to the

visiting professor, depending on his/her age, degrees held, and teaching

5. Travel Expenses to Japan
Travel expenses to and from Japan will be paid by the college.

6. Housing
Housing expenses are to be partially borne by the college.

7. Research Fund
The visiting professor will be granted the same amount of research fund as
the Japanese staff members.

to the college by the end of September, 1994.

2. A list of publications.
3. Names of two people for reference, with their addresses and
 present official positions.

Carol Pfaff of the Freie Universitaet Berlin has asked me to post the
following information for her:

Temporary one-year replacement position (or could be two different
one-semester replacement positions) for September 1995 - July 1996
(teaching approximately from 15 October - 15 February and 15 April -
15 July). Eight hours teaching per week (usually 2-hour classes which
meet once a week). Teaching topics preferred include sociolinguistic,
discourse analytic, historical linguistic, or psycholinguist topics
related to the USA or Canada or to English as a second or foreign language.
