Description:

The School is seeking staff to provide teaching and research activities in the field of English Language and Applied Linguistics. The appointment committee define these fields broadly, and are prepared to consider strong applications from scholars working in other areas of English studies. The School has particular teaching needs in introductory linguistics, stylistics, and discourse analysis.

The applicant will be expected to offer between three to four modules per year, and to be actively engaged in academic research, publication and dissemination. As English is a new school, the successful applicant will be required to play an active role in building the school, taking the lead in developing new areas of activity when required, and contributing to school, faculty and campus-wide activities in such areas as marketing, recruitment, internships and executive education.

She or he will be expected to be actively involved in grant applications, have a clear research and publication strategy and be willing to contribute to projects that complement the school and university’s research and knowledge-transfer activities.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Teaching, research, and administration.
- To teach and contribute to core modules in the specified areas and to supervise undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations.
- Examining and invigilating at examinations, and generally assisting with the work of the School.
- Original research is regarded as an essential part of the job. Time, duties and facilities are provided for this purpose.
- Pastoral care of students via a personal tutorial system.
- Administrative duties relating to teaching (assessment, standardisation, lesson preparation, report writing, attendance of regular course and general meetings).
- To undertake a two-day Introductory Course on effective teaching and the PGCHE (Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education), if appropriate.
- To attend professional-development workshops as deemed appropriate
- Any other reasonable duties appropriate to the post.

This job description may be subject to revision following discussion with the person appointed and forms part of the contract of employment.

Candidates must have a PhD (or close to completion) in English/Modern English Language/Applied Linguistics. Previous experience of University teaching is essential, so is experience of research publication.
