Focus: The focus of the summer school is on various approaches to research on bilingualism/multilingualism, both socio-culturally oriented and cognitively oriented.

The participants must be enrolled in a PhD program in linguistics or a related field of study.

Description:
The course is organized by the Center for Multilingualism in Society across the Lifespan (MultiLing) at the University of Oslo:

The course comprises two lecture series:
- Socio-interactional Perspectives on Second Language Learning
Instructor: Gabriele Kasper, University of Hawaii at Mānoa
- Usage-Based Approaches for the Study of Cognitive-Linguistic Dimensions of Multilingual Development
Instructor: Lourdes Ortega, Georgetown University

Professor Gabriele Kasper will give an overview of several socio-interactional approaches to second language acquisition (SLA), and then focus on Conversation Analysis (CA) as a perspective on second language learning and
development. This aspect of the course will begin with a review of CA's conceptual premises and methodological principles and practices, the structure of interaction, and CA’s perspective on social and psychological context, with
particular attention to cognition.

Professor Lourdes Ortega will first give an overview of traditional approaches to the study of cognitive-linguistic questions in the field of second language acquisition (SLA), and then focus on usage-based linguistics (UBL) as a
metatheory of language and four approaches within SLA that participate from it: Emergentism, Constructionism, Complexity Theory, and Dynamic Systems Theory. The course will also include a session on publishing in journals.

The program will consist of lectures (2x45 minutes) in the morning by the invited experts, and short student presentations followed by discussions in the afternoon. There are required course readings for the course.
