Description:

The School of English wishes to appoint a Lecturer in Linguistics. Colleagues in the School of English are known for their international-quality research in English Language, Applied Linguistics, Literary Linguistics, English Literature, Theatre and Performance, and Creative Writing and much of this activity is passed onto students through our research-led approach to learning and teaching. With over 50 members of academic staff, the School of English is able to offer outstanding teaching across a wide range of subject areas. In recent years five members of staff have received Senate Awards for Teaching Excellence, and one of our staff has been awarded a National Teaching Fellowship.

The post-holder will have a strong research profile in syntax and have a particular interest in the study of first language acquisition, and their field of research will complement existing research strengths in linguistics. You will have experience in working at the interface of these two subject areas and will be expected to contribute to existing modules, including Structure of English; Introduction to Linguistics (Level 1), Syntax (Level 2), and First Language Acquisition (Level 2). You will also develop and deliver new teaching at Level 3 in a subject related to your research specialism and also contribute to teaching at Masters level, and be expected to undertake a suitable administrative role. The ability to demonstrate outreach and public engagement is also desirable for this position.

You will have a PhD (or equivalent experience) in a relevant subject area together with proven teaching ability, and the ability to contribute to existing modules at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as developing new modules in your research specialism. The ability to contribute to Sheffield’s research profile in linguistics is essential for this position.
