The University of Luxembourg is a multilingual, international research University.
The University of Luxembourg is recruiting for its planned Language Centre a:
Senior Lecturer in Applied Linguistics and Language Teaching (Academic English)
2 years fixed-term contract
Due to its specific location, history and mission the language policy of the University of Luxembourg specifies three languages as languages of instruction: English, French and German. In order to support students as well as teaching and administrative staff in their linguistic competencies, the University of Luxembourg is to establish a Language Centre which will be responsible for the development and implementation of a structured and diversified programme of courses.
The University of Luxembourg is also planning a Research Priority Multilingualism and Intercultural Studies. An important task among others will consist in developing innovative ways of addressing the management of multilingualism at the level of the University itself. Through its research the programme will be able to provide evidenced-based recommendations concerning the language policies of the University. Language teaching, policy building and research on multilingualism will be in close dialogue with each other.
The duties of the lecturer will be to participate in the development of a structured course programme for Academic English and to teach academic English and advanced writing and communication skills to postgraduate and undergraduate students and to members of UL staff. Other important tasks will include participation in research on multilingualism/language learning in Higher Education (within the context of the planned Research Priority), and in administration related to the implementation of the Language Centre in the University.
Candidates will be required to have a PhD in the field of Applied Linguistics or any other relevant area, with a clear focus on Teaching Academic English. Besides excellent proficiency in English, candidates will have at least 3 years of experience in teaching academic English at tertiary level and in multilingual environments. A track record of post-doctoral research relevant to the position will be considered a significant advantage. Candidates should also have a good knowledge of at least one, but ideally both, of the other working languages of the university, i.e. French and German.
- The person to be recruited will support the project during the implementation phase (2014/2015); change to an open-ended contract is possible.
- The tasks consist in: 70% teaching, 20% research, 10% administration.
- The planned Language Centre will be attached to the Rectorate, in particular to the President. With respect to administrative matters, the person appointed will report to the Senior Advisor to the President on Multilingualism as administrative head of the planned Centre, Prof. Michel Margue, while with respect to teaching and research activities, the person appointed will work under the direction of the scientific and pedagogical coordinator of the Centre, Prof. A. Hu, both representatives of the President of the University.
