Dear LINGUIST Subscribers,

When you donate to The LINGUIST List, not only do you contribute to a new
generation of linguists forging their way into the digital age, but you also
help support students who might not otherwise have the means to continue on to
graduate school. We are a diverse group, but many of us, myself included, have
had to work outside academia to get to where we are.

It took me longer than average to finish my undergraduate degree. I was forced
to forego class registration almost every other semester because I had to work.
Although I received scholarships, that money barely covered tuition. I have
always had to work to ensure that my financial situation was stable enough to
continue with classes. After graduating and again looking for work, I was
uninspired and quickly becoming frustrated. I began to realize how deeply
determined I was to pursue the study of language and searched for a way to be
able to apply to graduate school. When I learned about the graduate student
opportunities at The LINGUIST List, I was elated. I applied and waited
nervously until I received my acceptance letter and my position as a graduate
assistant working at LINGUIST.

For me, working for LINGUIST has been a dream come true. I work for a
progressive organization that is as equally committed to its students as we are
to it. Our team members are dedicated to the field of linguistics. We are
unafraid to meet the challenges that come with working at LINGUIST. Apart from
my regular duties of posting Jobs, I participate in various projects at
LINGUIST, such as LL-MAP (which you'll be hearing about later on in Fund Drive).
We spend a lot of time working to maintain and improve the digital
infrastructure of the discipline through LINGUIST, and LINGUIST, in return,
provides a nurturing environment that encourages us to pursue our own research
paths. By donating to the LINGUIST List, you help keep the resources we offer
alive, but more importantly, you help students like me have the opportunity to
study so that we may one day contribute further to this discipline that we all

There are many ways to donate to LINGUIST!

check, money order, or wire transfer, please visit:

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as such can
receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered 501(c) Non Profit
organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These donations can be offset against
your federal and sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more
information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match any gift
you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your contacting your human
resources department and sending us a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns
to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative procedure that doubles the
value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment
to check if your company operates such a program.

Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
