Dear Fellow LINGUIST List Subscribers,

Greetings from San Francisco, California! Following the important LINGUIST List
reviews tradition of keeping book reviews edited in sunny climates, we've moved
reviews operations to the Westernmost point on the Western seaboard. Laura
Buszard-Welcher and I have taken over review responsibilities from the
University of Arizona team, which was formerly led by the superhuman Terry
Langendoen. Once an area of concentrated military significance, our office is
located in an old naval building at Fort Mason Center with a view of the Golden
Gate Bridge. Our San Francisco location is convenient to UC Berkeley and a
number of excellent ice cream vendors. It's also a crucial part of our new plan
to separate ourselves by as many times zones as possible from the European
publishers with whom we correspond.

I did my undergrad studies in linguistics at the University of Massachesetts
Amherst, and I am not a student worker at LINGUIST List; I work as a software
developer here in the Bay Area. Being in San Francisco, we are always very aware
of the ways technology is changing the world: entire industries are being
reevaluated. I see linguistics gaining recognition and importance as we progress
and introspect more. Publishing is changing, and the world is becoming ever
smaller; technologies are changing the way we publish, express, learn,
collaborate, etc. This is something linguists have been comfortable with for
some time, and I think the success of LINGUIST List reflects this. LINGUIST List
is an essential tool for linguists to access and participate in this new
marketplace of ideas.

One of the most amazing things about LINGUIST List is the breadth of information
we organize for people. In many ways it is the 'Google' of our complex
discipline. It has naturally fallen into leading roles in IT and organizing the
linguistic community's knowledge in projects such as GOLD and EMELD. I think the
biggest reason that LINGUIST List has taken its position as a leader in the
linguistics community is because it is the community - it encourages involvement
and dialogue, and it caters to all - from PhDs to undergrad mentoring.

When I came to Michigan for orientation with LINGUIST, I was immediately
impressed by the standards the crew held themselves to and the training the
moderators do for their student employees. The site and services are an industry
strength, and the experience for the students is priceless - they will have no
problems finding jobs and contributing to linguistics and other disciplines. I
think it all really shows in the site and the system.

When we took over reviews this past summer, Laura was not new to the LINGUIST
List community, but I was. I won't say it's hard to live out here on the West
Coast, but I do miss the summer-camp comraderie of the LINGUIST List offices.
Everyone has been so welcoming and inclusive - it's like I now have family in
Michigan that I miss. Thanks, LINGUIST List!

And thanks to all of you fellow subscribers who have supported LINGUIST over the
years, both financially and with your words of encouragement. I'd especially
like to thank those of you who have already donated to this year's Fund Drive--
your support will keep us going for another year! If you haven't yet donated,
please consider doing so today.

Chas Warner

This Year the LINGUIST List hopes to raise $55,000. This money will go to help keep the
List running by supporting all of our Student Editors for the coming year.

See below for donation instructions, and don't forget to check out our Fund Drive 2007
LINGUIST List Superhero Adventure for some Fund Drive fun!

There are many ways to donate to LINGUIST!

You can donate right now using our secure credit card form.

Alternatively you can also pledge right now and pay later.

For all information on donating and pledging, including information on how to donate by
check, money order, or wire transfer, please visit:

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as such can
receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered 501(c) Non Profit
organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These donations can be offset against
your federal and sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more
information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match any gift
you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your contacting your human
resources department and sending us a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns
to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative procedure that doubles the
value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment
to check if your company operates such a program.

Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!

We would like to thank all of the publishers and subscribers who
