The Great Salt Lake lies northwest of the city and is nine times saltier than any ocean. The Lake Effect helps create the driest, most fluffy snow ever skied, named on Utah license plates as "The Greatest Snow on Earth." The thing that makes Salt Lake a mountain lover's dream is the amazing proximity of quickly-rising mountains to a small, big city. One can be at the University of Utah campus, just east of downtown, and then at a ski resort in Big Cottonwood or Little Cottonwood Canyon in thirty-five minutes! There is many a ski bum, who might enjoy three or four days of powder a week and still hold a real job or be a full-time student at university. Other canyons in the Wasatch include Millcreek, Parley's, and Emigration, and all provide access to mountain biking, hiking, and cross-country skiing or downhill skiing and snowboarding.

Any linguist who visits Salt Lake City should see CAIL- the Center for American Indian Languages- located at the University of Utah, and affiliated with the Linguistics Department. CAIL provides students with the opportunity to be involved in documentation of the endangered languages of Native America. Students work with faculty and other scholars to address the needs of these languages' communities of speakers. CAIL houses an extensive library and a reading room, and also sponsors CELCNA, the annual Conference on Endangered Languages and Cultures of Native America.

Salt Lake is growing to be fairly ethnically diverse as many international refugee communities have settled in the city under government programs. The city has pockets of unique neighborhoods, including The Avenues and Sugarhouse. Cottonwood Heights lies near the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon and marks the southeastern edge of the city. Salt Lake hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics, regarded by many as being the most successful winter games ever. Nearby Park City, as well as venues in Salt Lake, Sundance, and Ogden, host the annual Sundance Film Festival. One beautiful landmark downtown is the Public Library.
