We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.
In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have taken the trouble to respond to the query.
The Lexikon der indogermanischen Verben p. 365 cites a Lithuanian verb knóju with the gloss 'abschälen' i.e. 'peel off'. It is said to be cognate with OHG (h)nouen 'scrape smooth, fit together precisely' and Greek knên 'scratch, scrape'. On-line Lithuanian dictionaries list only an infinitive knoti with a rather divergent meaning, and there seems to be not a single Lithuanian dictionary in the whole city of Memphis. Does anyone know the word (or words, in case the infinitive and the 1sg. are actually different verbs), and what meaning(s) do you associate with them?
I'll post a summary to the list if there are any interesting responses. Thanks in advance.
