The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.
Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page at http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been
set up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

Description:
Opportunity for a postdoctoral fellowship in L1 acquisition (Algonquian) The Faculty of Arts at Memorial University is seeking applications from promising new scholars in the social sciences and humanities, for a one-year postdoctoral fellowship. The Department of Linguistics at Memorial University would be glad to support an application from a candidate whose primary area of specialization is first language acquisition. We are home to a number of research projects which take Canadian Aboriginal languages as their focus (http://www.mun.ca/linguistics/research). One of these is a ground-breaking naturalistic longitudinal study of the acquisition of Cree as a first language, begun in 2004: the Chisasibi Child Language Acquisition Study (CCLAS, http://www.mun.ca/cclas). The prospective postdoctoral fellow would participate in the CCLAS project. We seek expertise in the areas of morphology and/or syntax, but researchers from any field related to Aboriginal Linguistics and/or First Language Acquisition should feel free to contact us about this opportunity. Familiarity with a polysynthetic language (especially an Algonquian language) would also be an asset. Contact Julie Brittain for further information on CCLAS (or on the 2008-2009 Arts Postdoctoral Competition). Further details about the 2008-2009 Arts Postdoctoral Competition are provided below. For full details, visit the application address listed below. Prospective candidates may also request further information from Frederick H. White (fwhite mun.ca), Associate Dean, Faculty of Arts (Research and Graduate Programs), Memorial University. Description: Postdoctoral Fellowships provide stipendiary support to recent PhD graduates who are: undertaking original research; publishing research findings; developing and expanding personal research networks; broadening teaching experience; and preparing to become competitive in national research grants competitions. Value and Duration: Postdoctoral Fellowships are valued at approximately $38,000 CAN per year, plus an accountable research allowance of up to $5,000 CAN per award. These are non-renewable fellowships, tenable for a one-year period. The award must normally begin on September 1, 2009. Eligibility: The applicant must: be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada; have earned the doctorate from a recognized university within the last five years of the proposed commencement of the postdoctoral period. A career interrupted or delayed for the purpose of childrearing will be taken into consideration with a letter of explanation from the applicant; not hold a tenure or tenure-track faculty position; have finalized arrangements for supervision with a department and academic advisor in the Faculty of Arts at Memorial University. To hold the award, applicants must: have completed all requirements for the doctoral degree by 15 August 2009; engage in full-time postdoctoral research for the period of the award; and not hold or have held a tenure or a tenure-track position or hold any other employment.
