Expressions of Posture and Motion in Germanic Date: 24-Oct-2008 - 24-Oct-2008 Location: Brussels, Belgium Contact: Jeroen van Craenenbroeck Contact Email: jeroen.vancraenenbroeck hubrussel.be Meeting URL: http://www.fusl.ac.be/linguistics Linguistic Field(s): Morphology; Semantics; Syntax; Typology Subject Language(s): Dutch (nld) English (eng) French (fra) German, Standard (deu) Meeting Description: The Séminaire des Sciences du Langage (Sesla) and the department of Germanic studies from the Facultés universitaires Saint-Louis are pleased to announce a one-day workshop on expressions of posture and motion in Germanic languages. The workshop is held in Brussels on October 24, 2008. This one-day conference aims at exploring the expression of postures and motions from various perspectives and linguistic theories (language typology, cognitive linguistics, generative linguistics). It will deal with the expression and the marking of horizontality, verticality and movement in general, and their linguistic patterns of lexicalization in Germanic languages in particular. It will further extend the field of research to other syntactic or morpho-syntactic elements in sentences, such as locational predicates, aspect markers, auxiliaries, classifiers, case markers, etc. The conference also intends to offer a broad cross-linguistic overview of the expression of postures and motions. From the point of view of conceptualization, it will examine the relationship between posture/location events and motion events and their expression.
