Business discourse views language as contextually situated social action constructed by its social actors and aims to understand how people communicate strategically in an organizational context. Business discourse research employs a variety of methods ranging from conversation analysis, pragmatics, corpus linguistics, genre analysis and intersects humanities and social sciences through its focus on language at work. This special topics conference seeks to position business discourse as an emerging discipline and to bring people from a variety of disciplines together to build a community of scholars with special interest in business discourse. Conference topics include but are not limited to: Workplace communication Leadership communication Corporate social responsibility Multicultural communication This conference will take place at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles and will consist of a series of plenary addresses, paper presentations, and panel discussions that focus on the topics of business discourse. Conference plenary speakers include: Gail Fairhurst (University of Cincinnati, Department of Communication) ''Discursive Leadership: Prospects and Possibilities'' John Conley (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill - School of Law) ''The Discourse of Corporate Social Responsibility: Rhetoric Meets Reality'' Special guest: John Graham, University of California, Irvine The Merage School of Business. Conference organizers are planning to publish ABC Business Discourse conference papers. Paper submissions: Submit your proposal via ABC website, www.businesscommunicationconferences.org/ocs/ by February 1, 2009.
